What Is Beard Shampoo

Beard shampoo is a specially-formulated liquid preparation containing detergent or soap for washing facial hair.

Why You Should Use Beard Shampoo

The foundation of any respectable beard care regimen is a good beard shampoo. This essential beard care product carries away excess oil called sebum and foreign contaminants that may clog your pores. Clogged pores lead to inflamed and irritated skin, itchiness, and acne. Without cleansing away sebum and other contaminants, your beard will certainly look unsightly and smell just as bad.

“Okay, okay…I will wash my beard, but I’ll just use my hair shampoo or bar soap. That’ll work, right?” Not exactly. Regular hair shampoo and bar soap will certainly remove foreign contaminants especially with a product that lathers up well. It will also remove sebum, but—unlike a specially-formulated beard shampoo—a normal hair shampoo or bar soap may remove ALL sebum from your skin. “But isn’t that the point?” Not quite. The function of sebum is to regulate how much water enters and exits your skin. It also protects your skin from bacterial and fungal infections. With that being said, you don’t want to remove ALL of the sebum; you just want to remove the excess oil that is at risk of clogging your pores.

Beard shampoo is much milder than hair shampoo and body soap and will simply remove the excess sebum. What’s more, some of the more quality beard shampoos are crafted with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antiseptic ingredients to further promote a healthy, comfortable, and beautiful beard.

Who Should Use Beard Shampoo

  • Anyone with a beard or moustache
  • Those with itchy and/or uncomfortable facial hair
  • Those with oily skin

How Do You Use Beard Shampoo

1. Wet your beard or moustache with lukewarm water. Be thorough; your facial hair should be dripping wet.

2. Dispense a nickel-sized amount in your palm, and rub your palms together to evenly distribute the beard wash on your hands.

3. Using your fingers, work the beard wash through your facial hair in a circular motion, and massage the skin beneath your beard with your fingers. Do this for 30 to 45 seconds.

PRO-TIP: Lathering is crucial at this step. If there aren’t a lot of foamy bubbles, dispense more beard wash into your facial hair.

4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

FAQ's

FAQs

Q. What's the difference from this and regular shampoo? What about regular bar soap?

A. Beard shampoo (or beard wash) are made specifically for the hair and sensitive skin on your face, and they’re usually milder than regular hair shampoo and bar soap. Regular hair shampoo and bar soap may dry out your skin and hairs, leading to tightness, irritation, dandruff, and rough hairs.

Q. Will beard shampoo help me grow a beard?

A. No, beard shampoo will not help you grow a beard. The ability to grow a beard is largely dependent on your genetics. Beard wash is simply meant to aid in growing a healthy and comfortable beard.

Q. Is it possible to wash my beard/moustache too much?

A. Yes, you can certainly wash it too much. As we explained above, the goal of washing your facial hair is to remove all foreign contaminants and any excess sebum. The key word here is “excess.” We don’t want to wash ALL the sebum away, just the excess. As a general rule, you should only wash your beard twice a day.
